The Amitabha Sutra | Pure Land Rebirth

Today we read and analyze the Buddhist text, The Sutra on Amitabha Buddha, while explaining the underlying meanings and context surrounding the teaching.

This is one of the most popular Buddhist texts and is one of the central texts for the Pure Land school.

The Pure Land Practice is about reciting the Buddha’s name, Amitabha or Amitayus, in the hope to achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Utmost Bliss. It is said to be the simplest practice in Buddhism to attain the highest supreme Enlightenment of Buddhahood.

However, despite its simplicity, a practitioner must still have a strong understanding of the Sutra as well as a deep faith in the teaching and practice in order to achieve the ultimate goal of a Pure Land rebirth.

Introduction to my course

In this video, I introduce myself as a devout Practitioner of the Path and an ex-Buddhist Monk in Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Taiwan. The purpose of teaching these Buddhist courses is to share my knowledge and experience in Buddhism with those who are interested in self-practice and actualization. All practices should involve the Three Acts of Goodness in some way by relating the teachings to the level of actions, speech, and thoughts.

Introducing The Amitabha Sutra

This class provides a brief introduction to The Sutra of Amitabha Buddha and explains why the Pure Land practice is so highly regarded in the East.   By understanding the context surrounding the Sutra, one is able to develop faith and confidence in the teachings and its practice.

The Amitabha Sutra – Reading and Explanation

Summarizing the Sutra

In this final class we discuss the practical aspects of the Amitabha Sutra and how to cultivate the Pure Land practice in order to attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Utmost Bliss.

Recite the Buddha’s name, have strong faith, cultivate merit with the three acts of goodness (purify actions, speech, and thoughts), and develop a concentrated and focused mind through meditation and mindfulness practices.

The Three Acts of Goodness Framework

In the final lecture, please apply what you’ve learned from The Amitabha Sutra into the Three Acts of Goodness Framework.

Think deeply and write at least 5 daily actionable practices you can incorporate into your daily life related to the three areas: Good Deeds, Good Speech, Good Thoughts.

This is the most important part of the course as everything you’ve learned is now tested by seeing how much of it is useful to you and how well you can bring the Pure Land practice into life.
