The Most Precious Thing in Life is Gratitude
We live in a world where it is increasingly more important to seek wealth rather than joy, where success is measured by how much we have instead of how much we give, and where beauty and fame are valued higher than kindness and gratitude. Like a dog chasing its own tail, we tirelessly chase after external objects and sensual pleasures, hoping that it can bring us happiness and fulfillment. But the very nature of seeking is that the seeker will always remain unfulfilled because the moment we obtain one thing, the seeking mind diverts its attention onto the next object of desire. Like this, we live out our lives from birth to death, forever from a position of lack.
Today we discuss the most precious thing in life we really should be seeking, the thing that leads to much joy for self and others, and that provides us with meaning and direction. This most precious gem that has the power to change our lives and bring love and peace to the world is gratitude and contentment.
Gratitude is Our Priceless Treasure
Much of our stress and anxiety comes from the thought that we don’t have enough and that we will only be truly happy once we possess the things we want or when certain things go our way. By thinking like such, we place our happiness into the hands of other people, objects and scenarios. This leads to ‘I’ll be happy when’ syndrome where our happiness is always placed at a future point in time that we will never end up reaching.
The truth is that we already have everything we need to actualize profound happiness right here and now. We simply need to develop an attitude of contentment and gratitude. As the saying goes, “It is not happy people who are grateful; it is the grateful people who are happy.” By being aware of all the things we have, such as our health, family, friends, sufficient food, shelter, clothes, employment, time, etc., we can adjust our mind, from a place of lack and deficiency to a place of contentment and satisfaction.
In fact, the more things we are thankful for, the happier we feel and the more joyful our natural mental state becomes. When our natural mental state is elevated, we effortlessly feel happy, fulfilled and energized without the need for any external stimulation.
How to Develop Gratitude and Contentment
One simple exercise to develop a mind of gratitude and contentment is to make a mental list of all the things. We are thankful for every morning the moment we wake up. This immediately puts us in a positive mindset to start the day. And has a powerful impact on our work and interpersonal relationships. During the day, when something unfavorable happens that dampens our spirit. We can instantly transform and purify our state of mind. By reminding ourselves of all the things we have to be grateful for. Then at night before bed, we can reflect on the day’s events and list out all the things. We are thankful for once again before finishing the day off with a smile.
By conditioning ourselves to think of grateful things and constantly returning. Our mind to a place of gratitude and contentment. We develop a strong and unshakable foundation based in joy and appreciation. Consequently, our minds of constant craving and seeking a return to our inherently calm and peaceful state. From this state, we are better positioned to handle all of life’s challenges. And achieve all the goals we set out.
How Gratitude leads to Kindness and Happiness?
By developing a mind of contentment, we naturally enjoy an elevated state of being with reduced desires and cravings. This helps us free up mental capacity and energy to attend to the needs of others. By embracing them, moment to moment, with our love and consideration. Hence, by simply being our kind and content selves. We effortlessly alleviate the stress and anxiety of others and inspire them with hope and joy.
By being an example of love and peace we can change the lives of the people around. Who will go on to change the lives of the people in their circles? Creating a ripple effect that can ultimately change the world. This is the power and potential of one person developing a mind of gratitude and contentment. May we all realize the importance and significance of being grateful. And content and make it a habit to develop these pure and wholesome qualities in our everyday life. This way we can all be the symbol of light and promise the world needs and deserves.
